“Icon of the Mother of God «The Quick to Hearken»” shows the Virgin holding the Child, in royal robes and crowned. The colours are saturated: red, green and gold.

What the picture shows

The Virgin holds the Child on her left arm, her right hand raised in a gesture of address. Her maphorion is deep red, with a green head cloth and a blue chiton beneath it, and her head is crowned in gold and crystal beads. Christ wears pale golden-white robes, one hand blessing, a scroll in the other. Both halos are round and golden with a fine pattern. The background is light ochre with an embossed plant ornament, framed by a wide border of blue, green and red diamonds, with a lettered band at the bottom. Beads cover the robes, halos, crown, border and background, while the faces and hands stay as print, so the painted modelling of the features is preserved. Sixteen colours give deep transitions in the folds of the red cloth.
