Description

“Capricorn” shows a horned goat with a fish tail — the mythical sea-goat. The colouring is restrained and the silhouette is what carries the piece.

What the picture shows

The figure lies inside the circle: the front is a goat with ribbed horns swept back, a beard and folded forelegs, while the rear turns into a large curving tail. The body is beaded in beige, ochre and dark brown, the coat rolls into small spirals at the shoulder and haunch, and the tail is worked in green and golden yellow with a wide fan of fin. A round medallion with the Capricorn glyph rests at the bottom, and a few green and gold rosettes are scattered around the ring. The background is printed on the canvas — a pale stone surface speckled with cracks. Beads cover the figure, the rosettes and the double ring, and the ground stays matte.
