Description

“Virgo” shows a girl in profile, her long hair spilling in spirals across the whole circle. It is the softest piece in the series.

What the picture shows

The face is given in profile with almost no detail: a thin nose line, lowered lashes, a calm expression. The real work is in the hair — strands curl into large and small volutes of brown, golden and copper beads and fill the space inside the ring. Flowers are woven into it: a red and a cherry bloom with white centres, orange-white and green rosettes, and small green leaves. A round medallion with the Virgo glyph rests below the chin on a cream ground. The background itself is printed on the canvas: a pale stone surface covered with a net of cracks. Hair, flowers, medallion and circle are beaded, so they stand clearly above the matte ground.
