“Icon of the Mother of God «Midwife»” shows the Virgin bareheaded, with the Child depicted in a radiance at her breast. It is an intimate piece in a warm golden key.

What the picture shows

The Virgin is shown half length in a deep red maphorion with wide sleeves, a blue chiton visible beneath it. Her hands are folded before her breast, and it is there, in a pale oval, that the swaddled Child appears. Long fair hair falls loose over her shoulders, a golden halo of rays surrounds her head, and beaded monograms sit to the left and right. The background is warm ochre with a plant pattern, and the whole image is set in a broad ornamental border of blue diamonds and golden flowers. A lettered band runs along the bottom. Beads cover the robes, the halo, the border and the ornaments densely, while the face and hands stay as print on the canvas, which keeps the painted softness of the features.
