“Retro boulevard” is a sunny city scene from the early twentieth century: an advertising column, a blue open-top car beside it, and a couple who have paused on the pavement. The mood is light, almost impressionist, with the feel of a warm day in town.

What the picture shows

A tall poster column with a blue-turquoise dome and a colourful bill stands at the centre; to its right sits a bright blue vintage car with a chrome radiator grille and wooden-spoked wheels. Beside the car are a woman in a pale coat and a man in a dark suit, with a small black dog worked in fine stitches next to them. Green tree crowns and an ochre building façade run along the boulevard, and further back you can make out passers-by and a dark red motor car. The brushwork of foliage and cobbles stays as print on the canvas, while beads cover the column, the car, the figures and the signs — those patches of colour are what hold the scene together. Eighteen colours give both the deep blue and the warm tones of the pavement.
