Main Bead Embroidery Kit Frosty sunrise

“Frosty sunrise” is a winter city street in silver-grey tones, everything under hoarfrost and the air still thick with freezing mist. The piece is almost monochrome: just eight bead colours.

What the picture shows

On the right a large building rises to the full height of the canvas, with bay windows, balconies and mouldings; its cornices, sills and roofs are edged in white beads like fresh snow. On the left, another facade and the dark silhouette of a tower with a tall spire show through the trees. Lamp posts and snow-covered parked cars line the street. Bare trees in the foreground are drawn in fine dark branches speckled with tiny white points of frost — the most delicate part of the beadwork. The street runs away into the distance and dissolves in white mist where the buildings are only just readable. The sky and the far perspective are left as print on the canvas, while the beads pick out the snow, the windows and the outlines of the facades. With so small a palette the piece rests not on colour but on light and texture: wherever the white and silver beads fall the surface shines, and everything else stays matte.
