Main Bead Embroidery Kit Primrose

“Primrose” is early spring: yellow and lilac crocuses have pushed up through the melting snow, and a bird with a black head and a rust-orange breast walks among them. The square format is arranged around it.

What the picture shows

The crocuses grow in two clumps — a larger one on the left, a smaller on the right — in two colours: a rich yellow and a pale violet veined with darker lines. The petals are worked in separate rows of beads, so the flowers come out rounded, and the centres are picked out in orange. The leaves are narrow and dark green, standing up in sharp blades. Between the flowers lies brown thawed earth, and along the edges is snow beaded in white and pale blue with blue shadows. The bird stands in profile at the centre: black back, white markings on the wing, a bright rust breast. The upper background is a warm golden honey tone, left as print on the canvas, which lets the flowers glow. The beadwork covers the flowers, the leaves, the snow and the bird, so the whole scene comes out in relief while the earth between them stays a soft printed patch — which is what makes the contrast between snow and first blooms read at once.
