“Edem” is a vivid sea bay: a pine leaning over turquoise water, a white sailing boat in the distance and a thick carpet of flowers across the rocky foreground.

What the picture shows

The tree grows on the right and throws a long curved branch across the whole upper part of the picture; the canopy is beaded in several shades of green with orange-red blossom burning through it. Beyond the tree the bay opens out — water running from deep blue at the horizon to pale turquoise near the shore, with a white sailing boat in the middle. Pink and terracotta cliffs close the bay on both sides. The densest beadwork is at the bottom: cushion-shaped bushes in saturated red, violet and blue, almost like sea corals, with small white and yellow flowers between them. The sky and the distant slopes stay as print on the canvas, so the flowers and the canopy stand out in relief and carry all the colour of the piece. The contrast is stated plainly: the cold blue of the water against warm reds and oranges, with a thin pale strip of shore between them.
