“Watering place” is a summer day beside a quiet pond: a mare and her foal have stepped into the water to drink, and a white gazebo wrapped in red flowers stands on the far bank.

What the picture shows

The composition is wide and balanced symmetrically around the water in the middle. On the left, under a white-barked birch, a dark chestnut mare bends to drink while the foal with its pale mane reaches towards her. The bank beneath them is covered in grass and pink flowers. On the right, among dense greenery, stands a round gazebo with a carved roof and a cascade of red blooms over its rail; it is reflected whole in the still water together with the trees. Lily pads are scattered across the surface, and further off the water recedes towards a pale line of trees. The greenery is beaded in several shades, from light spring green to deep emerald, while the surface of the water stays largely as print on the canvas — which is why the reflections look transparent. The beads pick out the horses, the gazebo, the flowers on the bank and the lily pads, that is, everything meant to come forward.
