Description

“City sketches – 2” shows the same building with the gilded spire, but this time the view opens across a fountain. Fans of water rise in the foreground.

What the picture shows

At the centre stands the tower with its lantern, dome and tall golden spire; below it are an arched portal with figures on either side and yellow walls picked out in white. Spreading trees frame both sides of the view, their canopies mixing green with rust and orange — early autumn. Across the bottom runs the fountain basin: several tall jets form arcs worked in white and silver beads as short separate strokes, which is what gives the water its movement. The dark blue mirror of the pool reflects the trees and the jets. The sky is pale with light clouds and stays as print on the canvas, as do parts of the distant facades; the beadwork covers the canopies, the water, the dome and the spire.
