Description

“Icon of the Mother of God «Inexhaustible Chalice»” shows the Virgin with her hands raised in prayer and, before her, a chalice holding the Child. The composition is strictly symmetrical and built on red and gold.

What the picture shows

The Virgin stands frontally in a bright red maphorion with a gold edging, arms spread and palms turned outward. The halo is worked in gold and bronze beads as rays radiating from her head. Lower, at chest height, the Child stands in a golden chalice with a hand raised in blessing and a halo of his own; an ornamental stem with small blue and red insets descends from the cup. The ground behind the figure is a warm ivory and stays as print on the canvas. A wide border of fine blue and red interlace dotted with white frames the icon, and a pale panel with a Church Slavonic inscription runs along the bottom. The beadwork covers the figure, the chalice, the halos and the ornament, so they stand in relief against the matte ground.
