“Christmas story” shows the porch of a country house dressed for the holidays: a red door with a wreath, a garland under the eaves, a snowman in a black hat and a ginger cat on the steps. A warm domestic scene set in a cool blue range.

What the picture shows

The house is clad in pale blue boards, the roof and the porch canopy are under snow, and icicles hang from the eaves. On the right is a red double door with a large green wreath and white columns on either side. On the left a window glows: through it you can see a room with a Christmas tree in strings of lights. In the foreground stands a snowman with a carrot nose, a striped scarf and a broom; a ginger cat has settled on the steps. Dark green firs under snow stand on both sides of the house. Yellow rectangles of window light are scattered across the blue snow in golden beads — they are what makes the scene feel warm. The densest beading falls on the snow, the walls, the door and the wreath, while the bare branches and the sky above the roof stay as print, so the relief is concentrated exactly where the eye goes first.
