Description

The home iconostasis panel “Nicholas the Wonderworker” is a waist-length image of the bishop in a mitre, his right hand raised in blessing and a Gospel book in his left. It is one of three panels meant to be stitched and hung side by side.

What the picture shows

The mitre is worked in blue, gold and white beads and looks almost like jewellery, with several rows of small stones and a cross on top. The halo is laid in concentric rings of gold beads, and the ground is a warm patterned ochre. The vestments are built on a red and gold sakkos and a blue omophorion with crosses, and a cross on a chain hangs on his breast. In his left hand he holds a closed Gospel in a decorated blue binding. A wide border of blue, red and gold ornamental squares surrounds the image, and a panel at the bottom carries the saint's name in beaded lettering. The face and hands stay as print on the artist canvas.
