The icon of the Mother of God “Ostrobramskaya” shows the Mother with her hands crossed on her breast, in a tall crown, against a deep blue ground. The image is solemn and at the same time deeply concentrated: the blue ground works like night, with the gold glowing against it.

What the picture shows

An openwork crown sits on her head, worked in gold and silver beads with coloured accents. A great halo of rays spreads out in every direction — long gold wedges that fill almost the whole surface. The maphorion is laid in golden bronze rows, a pale blue and white garment shows beneath it, and a dark crescent lies at the bottom. The blue ground is strewn with eight-pointed gold stars, a narrow ornament of blue and red diamonds runs around the edge, and a panel below the image carries a beaded Church Slavonic inscription. The face and the hands stay as print on the artist canvas, so they read softly against the dense, glinting beadwork.
