Description

The icon of the Mother of God “Merciful” shows the Mother holding the Child, who unrolls a scroll with text. The image is warm in colour and built on red, blue and gold.

What the picture shows

The Mother of God wears a crimson maphorion with a green lining at the collar, the Child a light blue shirt with wide sleeves, his feet and one hand left bare. Both halos are worked in gold and bronze beads — hers larger, the Child's carrying a cross pattern. A pale scroll with fine Church Slavonic lettering falls to the lower left, and it is exactly what makes the composition asymmetric and alive. The ground is a warm golden ochre, and a bright mosaic border of red, blue and gold squares runs around the edge. The faces and hands stay as print on the canvas, so the beads work on the robes, the halos and the ornament, framing the features rather than replacing them.
