The icon of the Mother of God of “Tenderness” is a waist-length image with the head inclined and the hands folded on the breast. The scene is intimate: no other figures, only a concentrated face in prayer. The colour is built entirely on blue, dark red and gold.

What the picture shows

A pale veil covers the head and shoulders, stitched in cream and golden beads; over it lies a deep blue maphorion, with a dark red dress showing beneath. A wide radiant halo spreads behind the head — sharp gold and brown wedges laid so that they form a star. The ground inside the arch is a warm ochre with a faint plant pattern. A border of red and white diamonds with floral inserts runs around the edge, and a pale panel at the bottom carries a beaded Church Slavonic inscription. The face and the hands stay as print on the artist canvas, so the expression keeps all the softness of the original painting. The rays of the halo reach almost to the edges of the arch, and they are what makes a small image visible from across the room.
