Main Bead Embroidery Kit Sand castle

“Sand castle” shows a small girl on the wet sand at the water's edge, with a freshly built sand castle and its towers standing beside her. A wave is about to reach it, and that wait is the whole quiet drama of the scene.

What the picture shows

The girl stands with her back to the viewer in a white strap sundress and a wide straw hat with a blue ribbon; one hand rests on her hip and red sandals show below the dress. To her left the sand castle rises from the wet sand with several towers, and beyond it the entire left half of the picture is given to the sea: white and turquoise foam, long lines of surf, a cool greenish tone in the water. The sand, by contrast, is warm ochre gold. Beads cover the dress, the hat, the castle, the foaming crests and the strip of sand underfoot, while the face, the hands and the far horizon stay as print on the canvas. The sea takes up almost half the picture, so the eye keeps travelling from the girl to the water and back.
