“Window to Rio” shows a woman in a blue dress standing in a doorway, looking out onto a terrace by the sea. A party is going on outside: guests in white, swaying garlands, a rustling palm.

What the picture shows

The dress is painted in saturated blue with black palm-leaf silhouettes and golden stars — the most striking detail in the picture. Her hair is gathered into a smooth knot and her hand rests on the door edge. On the left a wall is laid in brick of warm terracotta, beige and burgundy tones, with a black lantern of glass panes hanging beside it. The opening reveals a blue sea, mountains on the horizon, a palm and three figures in light clothes. Beads cover the dress, the brick wall, the lantern and the shutters, while the seaside view stays as print on the canvas. The hem of the dress spreads across the bottom of the frame, where the pattern is largest. A string of festive lights is strung above the terrace, and the shutters to the left of the doorway are closed tight.
