Description

“Flowers of the Sun” is a still life of sunflowers in a plain clay jug set on a wooden table against a grey plank wall. Simple things, plenty of light and a dense yellow.

What the picture shows

The bouquet is built from several large heads: two open sunflowers face the viewer directly, while others turn aside and downward, showing dark centres and long pointed petals. The leaves are stitched in deep emerald and dark green, the stems in olive. A warm terracotta jug stands in the heart of the bouquet. A few fallen petals are scattered across the tabletop. Beads cover the flowers, the leaves and the jug, while the weathered grey boards of the wall and the table stay as print on the canvas — and against that muted background the yellow reads especially rich. A few sunflowers have dropped to the tabletop and lie among the leaves, and one bud has not opened at all. The jug's handle just shows behind the stems, and open wall space is left above the bouquet.
