Description

“Rest on the rocks” shows two wolves in dense forest: one lies on a warm stone with its paws stretched out, the other stands behind and looks intently to the side. The mood is focused and calm at once.

What the picture shows

The vertical composition is packed with greenery — thick conifer branches, ferns and grass surround the animals on every side. The wolves' coats are stitched in shifting greys, ash and warm ochre, so you can see the way the fur lies in strands. Pale stone breaks out of the rock below, and pink thistles and small lilac flowers bloom beside it. The dark trunks and the depth of the forest stay as print on the canvas — beads cover the needles, the grass, the flowers and the wolves themselves, and that is what brings them forward. The lying wolf turns its face straight toward the viewer, its front paws hanging over the stone. The second stands higher, half hidden by branches, its pale chest reading clearly against the dark background.
