Description

“Venetian Cafe” is a sunlit corner of an old city where a narrow canal with a bridge sits next to a cosy cafe under a striped awning. The light falls at an angle, the way it does before evening.

What the picture shows

The left side opens onto the canal: a stone bridge, a gondola by red mooring poles, rows of old houses with tiled roofs and a bell tower in the distance. On the right rises an ochre wall with two white balconies holding boxes of red geraniums, while branches with lilac blossom wind across the facade below. The cafe doors and windows are beaded along with the awning, the flowers, the bridge and the balconies, while the sky, the canal water and the far perspective stay as print on the canvas — which keeps the light soft and diffused. Tables stand under the awning and a small sign hangs on the wall to the right of the door. On the left a narrow quay with steps runs along the water, and a few boats are moored right against the house walls.
