“Best friends” shows three little ones asleep against each other: a golden puppy, a striped kitten and a yellow duckling tucked between them. The scene is calm and warm, the kind that makes you smile.

What the picture shows

The trio has settled on the ground beside an old wooden fence, with branches of autumn leaves hanging overhead in ochre, orange and reddish tones. Grasses with tiny white and red berries grow around them, two white butterflies flutter above, and dry leaves lie scattered on the ground. A pale distant view opens through a gap on the right. Beads cover the leaves, the grass, the berries and the animals' fur, while the grey fence boards and the sandy ground stay as print — against that muted background the warm animal colours glow softly. The kitten presses its cheek to the duckling and the puppy rests its muzzle over both — that detail is what holds the whole composition together. The kitten's tail is worked in striped rows, while the puppy's paws stay almost cream.
