Description

“Sunday picnic” is a quiet summer day in an old village by a pond. A family has settled on the bank under a spreading tree while a boy has waded into the water to sail his toy boat.

What the picture shows

A large leafy tree anchors the left of the frame, and behind it stand stone cottages with tiled roofs and white windows. A wooden footbridge crosses the water, with posts and clouds reflected underneath. On the bank a woman in a light dress sits beside a man in blue, and red flowers are scattered through the grass. The beads cover the foliage, the houses, the flowers, the figures and the bridge; the clouded sky and the pond surface stay as print on the canvas, which keeps the water clear and calm. Another row of cottages hides among the trees beyond the bridge on the right, and a high sky with curling clouds stands over it all. A girl in pink has stepped into the water after the boy, and small ripples spread across the surface.
