“Weekend” shows a village yard beside an old thatched house where vintage cars have gathered for the weekend. People chat by the porch, children feed ducks at the pond, and swallows circle above the roof.

What the picture shows

Three antique cars hold the centre of the composition: a beige one, a bright red one and a blue one with gleaming chrome. The house is covered with a thick straw roof, ivy and roses climb the walls, and the windows have white frames. Greenery fills both sides, a band of red flowers runs along the bank, and ducks with ducklings swim across the dark water below. Beadwork covers the cars, the thatch, the leaves and the flowers, while the sky and the water surface stay as print on the canvas — that contrast is what gives the depth. The roof falls into two parts: a tall thatch over the porch and a lower one over the wing on the right. Several figures in hats and light clothes stand by the door, while two children crouch at the water's edge below with a dog.
