Description

“Spring Lyrics” is a bouquet of pink and white tulips in a clear glass vase, painted in light pastel strokes.

What the picture shows

The flowers are gathered into a dense armful: the pink buds are still half closed, the white ones have opened enough to show their yellow centres, and long green leaves stick out in all directions. A few tulips droop over the rim of the vase and one more lies on the table. The vase is round and clear, with stems and water showing through it. The background and the tablecloth are built from lilac, blue, pink and cream strokes with no firm edges. Beads cover the flowers, the leaves and the vase, while the blurred impressionist background stays as print on the canvas — so the bouquet steps forward and the space around it stays airy. Difficulty is high: the petals hold many close shades that have to be told apart carefully. The stems are gathered into a tight bunch in the vase and open into a wide fan above it. The glass is rendered in a few cool shades, with greenish water showing through.
