Description

“Happiness” shows a young mother in a pink wrap holding her baby and bending towards it. The subject is quiet, with almost nothing extra in it.

What the picture shows

The woman is covered by pink fabric that falls from her head over her shoulders in large soft folds; her face is lowered, her eyes closed, and she holds the child close. The baby, in a pale shirt, reaches a hand towards her. The background is warm ochre-gold and empty of objects — all the attention goes to the two figures. A wide white lace band with a scalloped edge closes the picture at the top and the bottom. There are only ten colours, and the piece rests on a smooth transition from pink into gold. Beads cover the wrap, the lace and part of the background, while the faces of mother and child stay as print on the artist canvas, so the skin looks soft and painterly while the fabric around it glitters. The lace at the top and the bottom is worked in small pale beads, so it looks light, almost weightless.
