What the picture shows

She wears a long dark coat, a hat and strapped shoes; the umbrella is tilted so that drops run off its edge. A round honey-coloured wicker basket stands beside her, and puddles and wet rails shine at her feet. Further on the platform dissolves into grey haze, a yellow train light glows in the distance, and dark trees and hills rise beyond the tracks. The rain is rendered as long white strokes running through the whole picture from top to bottom. The palette is cold — black, grey, blue, green — and only the basket and the far light are warm. Beads cover the figure, the umbrella, the suitcase, the basket, the streaks of rain and the reflections on the platform, while the sky, the hills and the distance stay as print on the canvas. The woman's figure is the darkest patch in the picture, and it is what holds the whole composition together on that grey platform.
