Description

“Toys” shows four old plush friends sitting in a row on a stack of books: three bears and a lilac donkey.

What the picture shows

The smallest bear in a red dungaree sits at the left, next to him a cream-white bear with a bow; in the centre the largest brown bear with a red checked bow raises a paw as if waving, and on the right sits a violet donkey with long ears. A row of book spines in pink, lilac and terracotta runs beneath them, and an old golden key hangs on the wall. The background is pale, like a painted wall with runs of colour, and a wide striped turquoise-and-white border frames the whole picture. Beads cover the toys, the books, the key and the striped border, while the wall stays as print on the artist canvas — so the fur looks soft and textured against the smooth background. Each bear has its own shade of fur, from near white to dark honey, so they never blur into one another.
