“Side streets of St. Petersburg – 3” is a narrow vertical view in which two autumn trees frame the street and a church glows in the depth.

What the picture shows

The trees stand on either side, their crowns closing overhead and leaving a strip of pale sky down the middle. In the depth stands a church with blue walls, gold and silver domes and a bell tower; nearer are low houses with porches, dark roofs and lit windows. The street is wet, and the puddles reflect the walls and the lamplight. The foliage is built from yellow, orange, red and green, the buildings from grey, blue and white, so warm and cool stay in balance. Beads cover the crowns, the façades, the domes and the reflections on the road, while the sky and the distance stay as print on the canvas, which is what keeps the depth of the street. The trunks are dark and damp, and the leaves are set as separate beads, so the crowns stay open and the sky shows through them.
