“Side streets of St. Petersburg – 2” keeps the same narrow format, but now the view runs straight into a tall building rising in the middle of the frame.

What the picture shows

The central structure is grey-blue, with rows of balconies and projections, and it stretches almost from the bottom edge to the top. Trees with dense foliage — russet, orange and green — embrace it on both sides, and a row of pale houses with columns and mouldings lines the street on the left. Far to the left a golden dome glints between the roofs. Below there is wet paving with long reflections and dark shadows under the walls. The colours are cool and the sky is silver, so the warm crowns carry the main accent. Beads cover the foliage, the façades, the dome and the reflections on the road, while the sky and the most distant buildings stay as print on the artist canvas, letting the city recede. The balconies and cornices are worked in short rows of beads, giving the façade a clear vertical rhythm.
