Main Bead Embroidery Kit Side streets of St. Petersburg – 1

“Side streets of St. Petersburg – 1” is a narrow vertical piece: a look down a lane after rain, with grey sky glowing between the buildings and an autumn crown hanging overhead.

What the picture shows

A tree with russet, yellow and still-green leaves runs the full height on the right, a dark wall closes the left, and the depth of the street opens between them. In the centre stands a house with bay windows and steep roofs painted lilac-grey; a street lamp burns beside it, and further off a tall spire is guessed at through the haze. The pavement is wet, with long pale reflections running to the bottom edge. The palette is cool — grey, blue, silver — and only the leaves bring warm patches. Beads cover the foliage, the façade, the lamp and the reflections on the paving, while the sky and the far distance stay as print on the canvas, keeping the lane deep and misty. Another dark façade closes the lane at the lower right and keeps the eye from wandering out of the picture.
