“Bonnie” is a retro portrait of a fair-haired woman with a cigarette in a long holder; she looks aside, as if someone had just interrupted her conversation.

What the picture shows

She wears a lilac-violet dress with glossy draping, a black wrap over her shoulders and a dark cap pinned with a large flower in pink, lilac and green. A pearl necklace sits at her throat and a second strand hangs lower. The portrait is again set in an arched window against an old map with a compass rose, in warm golden-brown tones with openwork ornament along the edges. Nineteen bead colours give smooth transitions through the violets, from near black to pale lilac. Beads cover the dress, the wrap, the cap, the jewellery and the frame ornament, while the face, the hands and the map stay as print on the canvas, so the portrait keeps a painted look while the clothing gains volume. The long holder and the thin thread of smoke almost dissolve into the golden background, so the eye comes straight back to her face.
