“Palm Sunday” is a spring holiday still life: willow branches in a glass vase, an oval tray of red eggs and a glass of red wine, with a white church among birches behind them.

What the picture shows

The willow branches are tall and spreading, covered in small fuzzy catkins; the vase is clear glass and a white lace cloth lies beneath it. Red eggs are gathered on the oval tray in front, with one more resting apart on the table. In the depth stands a white church with a blue and red roof and a cross, birch trunks with black markings and a light spring sky. The palette is cool — white, silver, blue and green — with red doing the work of the main accent. Beads cover the branches, the eggs, the glass, the tray and part of the foreground, while the church and the birches stay as print on the canvas, so the still life steps forward and the view reads as a backdrop. The long willow branches reach far beyond the vase and almost touch the top edge of the picture.
