“Breath of Spring” is a first spring bouquet: red tulips and white narcissi in a pale jug, with lily of the valley in a small round glass vase beside them.

What the picture shows

The tulips are open and full, with almost black centres; the narcissi are white with yellow-orange coronas, and long green leaves fan out in every direction to hold the arrangement together. The little vase of lily of the valley stands to the right and lower down, adding fine white lace. Two fallen petals lie on the pale tabletop. The background is calm and bleached, built from beige and grey planes that read like a studio wall and a stretcher bar. Beads cover the flowers, the leaves and both vessels, while the background stays as print on the artist canvas — so the bouquet steps forward and the space around it stays airy.
