“Fantasy forest” is a quiet woodland still life: a tipped-over wicker basket with white mushrooms spilling out of it and a smaller basket of little red berries beside it.

What the picture shows

The arrangement sits on a plank table against a pale wooden wall. Firm mushrooms with thick stems and brown caps have rolled out of the large basket; on the left stands a low basket heaped with red berries, and a clay jug shows behind them. From above hangs a branch with broad serrated green leaves and white flowers with yellow centres. The palette is restrained: ochre, brown, warm wood, green and accents of red. Beads cover the mushrooms, the berries, the leaves and the woven baskets, while the wooden wall and the tabletop mostly stay as print on the canvas — so the texture of the wicker and the mushroom caps clearly step forward. A few mushrooms and scattered berries lie in the foreground, as if they had just been brought in from the wood and not yet sorted.
