Description

“Summer bouquet” is an armful of sunflowers in a plain pale jug, with a bowl of ripe apples beside it on the table. It has the mood of late summer, when the flowers are cut in your own garden.

What the picture shows

The sunflowers are fully open: yellow, orange and almost russet petals around dark brown centres, with large green leaves and a few buds pushing between them. The jug is cream with a soft shadow down one side; in front of it stands a low bowl of red-cheeked apples, and a few more lie on the tabletop. A white lace curtain hangs on the left, and the cool grey-blue background is exactly what makes the yellow read so warm. Beads cover the flowers, the leaves, the jug and the apples, while the curtain and the background stay as print on the artist canvas — the beadwork gathers light on the petals, so the bouquet seems lit from within. A few smaller blooms droop below the rim of the jug and balance the heavy top of the bouquet, while the bowl casts a long soft shadow across the tabletop.
