“Flower street” is a corner of an old southern town: a narrow flagstone lane, warm stone walls and cascades of red flowers spilling from walls and steps.

What the picture shows

Along the house on the right grow bushes covered in small red blossoms; on the shaded left there are broad green leaves and pink flowers in a planter, and between them the depth of the lane opens onto a white-and-blue sky with cumulus clouds. The walls are sand and honey coloured, with shutters and a small window under an awning; the pavement is laid with pale uneven slabs dappled with sunlight. The palette runs on the contrast of warm stone against dense greenery and red flowers. Beads cover the flowers, the leaves and the paving, while the sky, the clouds and the far distance stay as print on the canvas — so the lane keeps its depth and the flowers step forward. Steps hide under the flowers on the right, and a terracotta pot stands by the wall below, almost buried in greenery.
