Description

“Quiet Sunset” is an evening view over still water: the sun has almost set, the sky and the lake are flooded with gold, and the banks are ablaze with autumn leaves.

What the picture shows

A large tree with russet, red and still-green foliage stands in the right foreground, low bushes and grass fill the left, and together they frame the mirror of the water. A pale sun hangs over the far bank in the centre, sending a wide bright path across the lake broken into small horizontal glints. The palette is warm: honey ochre, orange, brick, deep green and gold. Beads densely cover the crowns, the bushes, the grass and the reflections on the water, while the sky and the farthest bank stay as print on the canvas — so the foliage looks rounded and shimmers while the air above the water stays soft and clear. In the near water there are scattered pale patches of water lilies, and the left bank is overgrown with thick grass and reeds.
