Description

“The Four Elements – Earth” is another square piece from the elements series: a woman's face inside a crown of swirling golden rays that look like dry grass and wheat caught by the wind.

What the picture shows

The headdress spreads around her head as one huge sun disc and curls into a spiral; ochre, copper, dark gold and emerald veins are woven through it, and a blue-green stone glows above her brow. She looks up and to the side, her neck and shoulder bare, with a deep blue field behind her that makes the gold burn brighter. The outer border is ochre and cracked, like old plaster. The beadwork covers the rays of the crown, so they come out textured and glinting, while the face, the shoulder and the blue background stay as print on the canvas — the whole piece rests on that contrast. Small green and turquoise beads are scattered unevenly through the gold, and they are what keeps the crown from looking flat.
