Description

“The Four Elements – Water” is a square piece from a series about the four elements: a woman's face wrapped in a crown of water frozen mid-flight into wave crests and fine spray. The mood is calm and slightly mysterious, like the deep sea.

What the picture shows

The headdress opens into a wide fan around her head and covers her eyes, so only the cheeks, nose and lips stay visible. The whole watery structure is built from shades of blue — near-black ink, steel, turquoise and icy white, with small greenish sparks. The background glows a cold turquoise-blue with vertical bands that read like light rays under water. The beadwork covers the crown of waves and spray itself, so that is what shimmers and stands out in relief, while the face and the glowing background stay as print on the artist canvas, keeping the warm skin smooth beside the glittering water.
