Description

“The Four Elements – Air” is the companion piece to Fire: the same composition, but the headdress is built from turquoise, silver and green feathers, and the background is cool.

What the picture shows

The woman is shown three-quarters, her chin raised and her gaze off to the side; the shoulder is bare and the skin is painted in an even tan. A huge fan of long pointed feathers opens around her head: dark, almost graphite near the face, then shifting into turquoise, emerald and cool silver, and breaking into fine strands at the edges. The background is smooth, running from pale turquoise at the top to light green below, with a few white flourishes like gusts of wind; the image is edged with a thin turquoise line. There are only eight bead colours, all from the cool part of the spectrum. It is the headdress that is beaded — it gives the work its texture and pearly sheen; the face, the shoulder and the background stay as print on the canvas.
