What the picture shows

The figure in red with white fur trim takes the centre and nearly the whole height of the canvas: a white-bearded man in boots and a broad black belt has swung a large brown sack over his shoulder and is glancing back. On the left stands a tree decorated with red, green and gold baubles and a garland. On the right is a white brick fireplace, and a brown-and-white spotted dog sits in front of it, while a striped cat has settled by one boot. Further back are a table with treats and a candle, a curtained window, a framed picture on the wall, wallpaper with small red flowers and a blue braided rug on the floor. Beads cover the costume, the sack, the tree with its baubles, the fireplace, the animals and the rug; the wallpaper and the far objects stay as print.
