“Mystery of birth” is a Christmas scene by the manger: a white-bearded elder in a blue robe, a girl angel in a striped dress and a baby on the straw. Warm light and complete stillness.

What the picture shows

The composition is horizontal with three figures in the centre. On the left sits an old man with a long white beard, wearing a long blue robe with fur trim and a cap with a sprig of holly; he leans on a staff. On the right a girl kneels with large white wings and a holly wreath in her hair, in a red-and-white striped dress. Between them a baby lies in a manger of straw. A lamb has come up beside them, two rabbits can be seen below, and a white dove flies in a beam of light above; the background is deep blue, sprinkled with small stars. Beads cover the blue robe, the wings, the dress, the wreath, the manger and the dove; the faces, the lamb and most of the sky stay as print on the canvas.
