Description

“Merry Yule” shows a snowy small-town street on the eve of the holidays, with a tree on the square, lit shop windows and a cart full of presents. A crowded scene in blue and gold.

What the picture shows

The action runs deep into the street. On the left stands a brick house with an attic, a garland along the gable and a window through which people can be seen; a dark red vintage car is parked by the porch. On the right a row of shops with green awnings stretches away, and in front of them a horse pulls a cart loaded with boxes and barrels, with women in long coats and hats walking beside it. Further back, in the middle of the square, a decorated tree glows with red baubles. The snow on the cobbles is blue and lilac with long shadows, while the sky above the roofs is warm creamy yellow. Beads cover almost everything: the facades, the garlands, the shop windows, the tree, the figures, the cart and the snow; only the far sky stays as print.
