Description

“Bullfinches” shows five red-breasted birds on snowy branches hung with berries. A frosty winter garden in lilac and white, where the birds themselves are the only warm colour.

What the picture shows

The birds are placed across the whole surface so that the eye travels from the top left corner to the bottom right: two sit on berry branches above, one clings to a thin shoot on the left, and two more perch in the centre and on the right among dry stems. Their breasts are deep red shading into orange, their heads and tails black, their backs blue grey. Around them are frost-covered bushes, heavy clusters of red berries under snow, and rusty dry weeds sticking out of the drifts. A small wooden feeder can be made out further back. The background is white and lilac, almost without shadows. Beads cover the birds, the berries, the frost on the branches, the weeds and the snow — the work is stitched densely, almost solidly, which is why it needs over eighteen thousand beads.
