Description

“Expectation” is an elongated vertical composition in the Viennese Art Nouveau manner: a female figure in profile, covered entirely in geometric ornament, against a golden ground of spirals.

What the picture shows

The figure sits to the left and fills the whole height of the canvas. The head is shown in sharp profile, the dark hair pinned up and dressed with a small headpiece, the arms raised in a characteristic gesture with stylised hands. The robe falls to the floor and breaks into rows of triangles — gold, silver grey, pink and turquoise — which turn towards the bottom into a band of finer ornament of little squares and eyes. The background is ochre gold, with large brown spirals spreading across it like curling branches. Beads cover the whole ornament of the robe, the headpiece, the spirals of the background and the decorative band below — that density is why the kit holds more than twenty thousand beads. The face and hands stay as print on the canvas.
