Description

“Mother and Child” is a maternal embrace in the decorative manner of Viennese Art Nouveau: a woman with closed eyes bends towards a child, and a golden flowered blanket wraps them both.

What the picture shows

The format is horizontal, and the two heads — the mother’s above, the child’s below — form a soft diagonal in the centre. The faces and the bare shoulder are painted naturalistically in a warm flesh tone, while everything around them is turned into ornament. The blanket is made of golden ochre scales scattered with round flowers: white, red, pink, blue and lilac, each with a dark centre. A green branch with rounded leaves runs down the shoulder on the left, and the background at the right and top is broken into vertical bands of violet, green and ochre. Beads cover the pattern of the blanket, all the flowers, the branch and the striped background; the faces, hands and shoulder stay as print on the canvas, which is why the skin looks smooth while the pattern around it shimmers.
