Description

“Rendezvous” shows a couple walking on wet sand at sunset under a striped parasol. Both are seen from behind, which makes the scene feel accidentally overheard.

What the picture shows

The figures are given almost as silhouettes and stand near the centre: a woman in a light sleeveless dress with her dark hair pinned up, and a man in a white shirt with braces, dark trousers and a straw hat. He holds a large pink-and-white striped parasol over them both, and it becomes the main shape in the upper part of the piece. Behind them is a band of calm sea and a strip of shore; in front lies wet sand in which both figures are mirrored. Sky and sand are painted in one warm range: golden yellow, ochre and coral. The palette is very restrained, only nine bead colours. The parasol, the dress, the shirt, the trousers and the hat are stitched, while the sea, the sky and the sand stay as print on the canvas.
