Description

“Second summer” is a quiet river bend in early autumn, with two large trees on either side and a wedge of birds in the sky. Warm late-day light and no movement except the water.

What the picture shows

The composition is square and symmetrical: spreading trees stand left and right, their crowns already threaded with rust orange and gold among the green, and between them a gap opens onto a meadow, blue water and pale hills in the distance. A small wedge of birds flies near the centre of the sky. The lower third of the piece is water: calm, dotted with duckweed and crossed by a long golden trail from the low sun. The colours are warm but muted, with no harsh contrasts. Beads cover the foliage of both trees, the bushes, the grass on the bank, the duckweed and the highlights on the water; the sky, the far hills and the smooth surface stay as print, so the crowns look dense and full.
