Description

“Bewitched forest” is a panorama of a snowbound wood at pink dusk, with a small wooden bridge over a frozen stream. A frosty evening, when the snow takes on a lilac tint.

What the picture shows

The format is very wide and the subject unfolds from left to right: tall spruces and spreading trees stand on both sides, completely covered in hoarfrost, while a hollow with a two-post bridge opens in the centre. Snow lies in heavy cushions on the branches and drifts, and the bed of the stream can be made out between them. The sky shifts from pale pink and peach near the horizon to a cooler lilac above, and on the right warm sunlight breaks through the branches — the only truly yellow patch in the piece. The palette is restrained: just ten bead colours, all of them from the cool part of the spectrum. Beads cover the caps of snow, the frost on the branches, the drifts and the bridge, while the soft sky stays as print on the canvas.
